After Michael Schumacher’s great Formula 1 success, expectations were high for his son, Mick Schumacher. After two years in Formula 1 with the Haas team, Schumacher already had to leave F1. Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone would have liked things to be different.
Although Schumacher did not have much success in Formula 1, he fared better in the training classes. For example, he became Formula 2 champion in 2020. Since 2019, he was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Eventually, he was allowed to drive for the Haas team for two seasons.
Bernie Ecclestone, now 93 years old, would have preferred a different career path for the German. “He would have been in good hands in a team like Red Bull with their junior program, where they help young drivers achieve victories. That spoiled a lot of things for him”, Ecclestone told Süddeutsche Zeitung
According to the Briton, Michael Schumacher’s work in the paddock would have been very useful for his son. “If his father had been there with him, he could have had a completely different influence on him”. After Michael’s serious skiing accident, this is no longer possible.
For now, Mick Schumacher has to settle for a spot as a reserve driver at Mercedes. Furthermore, he will also drive for Alpine in the WEC from this year. Nevertheless, the German remains confident that he will find his way back to Formula 1 and will show that he belongs there.
