Rafael Nadal Withdraws from US Open Due to Fitness Issues

Rafael Nadal has announced he will not participate in the US Open due to fitness concerns, marking his second consecutive absence from the tournament. The 38-year-old tennis star, who has won the US Open four times, most recently in 2019, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter). “I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open, a place where I have amazing memories,” Nadal wrote. “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time.”

Nadal’s next appearance will be at the Laver Cup in Berlin from September 20-22. Despite his 22 Grand Slam titles, Nadal has faced challenges recently, including a defeat by Novak Djokovic in the second round of the singles competition at the Paris Olympics and reaching the doubles quarterfinals with Carlos Alcaraz.

US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster expressed regret over Nadal’s absence, stating, “Rafa is a tremendous champion and he will be missed during the 2024 US Open by the fans and all those associated with the tournament. We wish him all the best and look forward to having him back at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.”

Formerly ranked world No. 1, Nadal has dropped to 159th due to ongoing injuries. He experienced a significant loss to Djokovic at the Olympics with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat. Earlier this year, he withdrew from the Australian Open after a muscle tear during his comeback from a long injury hiatus and faced an early exit at the French Open, losing in the first round. Nadal also skipped Wimbledon to focus on the Paris Olympics, held on the clay courts of Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open titles.
