Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi, who drove with the Italian outfit from 1991 to 1995, compares Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 Ferrari transition to Michael Schumacher’s switch to Ferrari in 1996.
Hamilton’s announcement on February 1st, declaring his move to Ferrari in 2025, reverberated through the Formula 1 community, surprising even those close to him, such as team principal Toto Wolff and his brother Nicolas Hamilton
Alesi missed out on being Schumacher’s teammate by a few months, despite the two knowing each other. Comparing the switch made by both drivers to Ferrari, Allesi revealed that Hamilton’s “depth” reminds him of Schumacher and that 2025 would be an “electrifying adventure”. Speaking to Corriere della Sera, he said:
Lewis’s depth makes me think of Schumacher’s, in terms of personality and charisma, with all due respect to Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel who also arrived in Maranello loaded with titles and a reputation of the highest order. So, I expect an electrifying adventure, renewed race after race, around which there will be universal interest.”

However, Alesi made a huge claim that if Schumacher was still racing in Formula 1 today, he would have never preferred Hamilton to be his teammate. He added:
If there is one driver Alesi sympathizes with, that is Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who will be replaced by Hamilton next year. He said:
”I say: great that Lewis is coming, even if I am very sorry for Carlos Sainz, whose behaviour and performance in recent years have been more than positive, even surprising. Results, competitiveness and discipline. Strong and fair. A true gentleman of motorsport who at this point finds himself in an uncomfortable and undeserved situation. Although I am convinced he will find other new opportunities, given his talents and the prestige he has accumulated by racing alongside Leclerc.”
