Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl is moving towards Jamaica

Hurricane Beryl has intensified into a Category 5 hurricane, packing winds of up to 160 mph as it moves through the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center reports that reconnaissance flights Monday night confirmed Beryl’s increasing strength.

Currently, Beryl is tracking west-northwest at 22 mph and is expected to maintain this path over the next few days before turning westward on Thursday. The storm is projected to swiftly cross the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea, passing near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday.

Despite predictions of weakening starting Tuesday, the NHC warns that Beryl will likely remain at near major hurricane intensity as it approaches Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Further weakening is anticipated afterward, although Beryl is forecast to persist as a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.

Earlier today, Beryl battered the Windward Islands after making landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island as a Category 4 storm with winds reaching 150 mph at its peak. The hurricane caused widespread power outages and significant damage to infrastructure, prompting authorities to advise residents to seek shelter.

We will continue to monitor Hurricane Beryl’s path and provide updates as the situation develops. Stay tuned for more details on this unfolding weather event.
