Dengue Virus Outbreak Hits New York and New Jersey

Nearly 200 people have been infected with dengue in New York and New Jersey this year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New York has reported 143 cases, while New Jersey has seen 41.

Dengue, typically found in tropical and subtropical regions, has seen an alarming rise in the United States. Over 2,500 cases have been reported nationwide so far this year, which is about five times higher than the same period last year. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, accounts for the majority of these cases, with over 1,700 reported, leading to a public health emergency declaration in March.

Last month, the CDC issued a health alert to warn healthcare providers about the increased risk of dengue virus infections. Globally, new cases of dengue are at their highest on record, according to the CDC.

Dengue spreads through mosquito bites, and its most common symptoms include fever, aches and pains, nausea, vomiting, and rash. Symptoms typically begin within two weeks of being bitten by an infected mosquito and last for 2-7 days. Most people recover within a week.

The CDC emphasizes that the best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites.
