In the world of UFC, tensions are once again flaring between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Last month, Poirier faced off against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in the UFC 302 main event, where he unfortunately came up short. Meanwhile, Conor McGregor has recently withdrawn from his planned comeback fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 due to a toe injury.
McGregor hasn’t been in the Octagon since his leg injury in his trilogy fight against Poirier at UFC 264. Since then, Poirier has twice fought for the championship belt, losing to both Charles Oliveira and Makhachev.
The relationship between McGregor and Poirier has seen its share of drama over the years. Leading up to and following their bout at UFC 264, any semblance of cordiality disappeared, with McGregor launching personal attacks against Poirier and his wife.
Recently, after UFC 302, Poirier decided to auction his full fight kit, with all proceeds going to his charity, The Good Fight Foundation, which supports youth in Louisiana with school supplies and other essentials.
Appearing on The MMA Hour on Wednesday, Poirier revealed that former UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov had offered to bid on the kit after the initial winning bid fell through. McGregor, who has a contentious history with both Nurmagomedov and Poirier, seized the opportunity to mock his old rivals. He accused Poirier of “scamming” donors in a series of posts on social media.
As of now, Poirier has not responded to McGregor’s jabs, and there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by The Good Fight Foundation.
Poirier has hinted at one final UFC fight before retirement, with potential opponents including Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor himself. Meanwhile, McGregor continues to rehabilitate his toe injury and hopes to return to the Octagon later this year, possibly against Chandler. During his recovery, he seems to be keeping busy by taking shots at former rivals like Poirier.
