China has accused NATO of seeking security at the expense of others and cautioned the alliance against bringing chaos to Asia. This comes a day after NATO labeled China a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded firmly, criticizing NATO for its stance. “NATO hyping up China’s responsibility on the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives,” Lin said, emphasizing China’s fair and objective stance on the conflict.
China has notably diverged from the United States and European allies regarding the Ukraine war, refusing to condemn Russia’s invasion. Trade between China and Russia has increased since the invasion, partly mitigating the impact of Western sanctions.
NATO’s recent communique from a summit in Washington highlighted China’s role in supporting Russia through its “no-limits partnership” and substantial backing of Russia’s defense industry.
Lin defended China’s trade with Russia as legitimate and in accordance with World Trade Organization rules. He accused NATO of compromising other countries’ security and echoed Russia’s concern over NATO expansion.
China has also expressed unease over NATO’s growing ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Leaders from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea attended the NATO summit this week, signaling closer cooperation.
“China urges NATO to stop interfering in China’s internal politics and smearing China’s image, and not create chaos in the Asia-Pacific after creating turmoil in Europe,” Lin stated.
In related news, Chinese troops are in Belarus for joint drills near the Polish border, marking the first-ever exercises with Belarus, a key Russian ally. Lin described the training as a standard military exchange, not aimed at any particular country.
