Rafael Nadal congratulates Rohan Bopanna on ‘amazing and unique’ achievement after

Rafael Nadal congratulated Rohan Bopanna after the Indian star won the Australian Open 2024 mixed doubles title with Matthew Ebden. On Saturday, January 28, Bopanna and Ebden defeated the Italian pair of Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6 (7-0), 7-5 in the final at the Rod Laver Arena.

Bopanna became the oldest to win a Grand Slam title at the age of 43. It also happened to be his second title after he won the 2017 French Open mixed doubles title along with Gabriela Dabrowski.

Earlier, Nadal became the oldest doubles World No.1 and also completed 500 wins in his career. Moreover, he won the prestigious Padma Shri along with 6 others in the sports category.

On Sunday, Nadal took to his Instagram story to laud Bopanna for his “amazing and unique” achievement.

Nadal wrote, “Congrats Rohan on an amazing and unique achievement!!!”

After the match, Bopanna said that two years ago, he contemplated retiring from tennis after not being able to perform consistently. On Saturday, his wife Supriya and their daughter Tridha were present to watch him script history at Melbourne Park.

Bopanna also asked youngsters to break free from the limitations of a time limit and to never give up, regardless of how gloomy the situation is.

As far as Nadal is concerned, he was scheduled to make his comeback in Grand Slams after a gap of nearly 12 months. However, he pulled out of the hard court major due to an injury concern. The veteran returned to competitive tennis at Brisbane International.

Nadal is set to return in the ATP 250 event in Doha in February after being named in the entry list. The veteran could end up locking horns with Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev. It also remains to be seen if Nadal takes part in the French Open, a tournament that he has won as many as 14 times in his career.
